In this video I go over loads of fishing gear for beginners from Walmart. What you need from the sporting goods department to start saltwater fishing. I share a lot of tips while giving ideas for things that beginners to fishing must have in order to be successful.

I’ll give you some ideas for lures, hooks, sinkers, weights, swivels and gear you will need to get started. This video will help you make wise choices that will keep you from wasting money on things you don’t need for fishing.

Section one is all about choosing the right size fishing reel and rod while giving brand name suggestions.

Section two explains what type of fishing line is best to use on the reel and offers some suggestions for leader line types and sizes.

Section three is a slight discussion about what tackle box might be best to start out with.

Section four is all about the different lures that would be good to have in your tackle box.

Section five is loaded with information about the right hooks, sinkers and swivels to buy.

Section six includes some various gear needed like, sunglasses, knives, bait buckets, aerators and needle nose pliers.

One of the main reasons I get fishing gear from Walmart is because they have a three month return policy. It’s nice to just be able to take something back and get a refund or have it replaced without any hassles. That is as long as you have your receipt, right?

When you start out fishing it can be overwhelming when you walk down a sporting goods isle and see all of the options. I hope this video helps you narrow down your choices and gets you equipped with the basic items you need.

Below I’ve listed all of the videos I mentioned in this one. They are all packed with helpful information.

  1. Diawa Laguna rods from Academy are good rods for beginners and experienced fishermen as well too. They were $29.99 for the longest time but I recently have seen the price on them increase to $34.99. Caught lots of Whiting on them as well as on Ugly Stik GX2’s.

  2. Some good info in here. One thing that was missed, although I didn’t watch the entire video, don’t send people to Walmart!!! There are so many GREAT tackle stores in the Bay area that will give great advice and have the equipment that you need!!! A few that come to mind are Bett’s tackle center, Bill Jackson’s, Dogfish tackle, Mastry’s, just to name a few!!! Mastry’s even sells used stuff still in great condition!!! These places will get you on the fish, they will even spool reels with your line of choice so you don’t have to buy a spool and have one third of a useless spool left over. Don’t go to Walmart!!!

  3. Great content JC. Any suggestions on how to keep my braid from tangling on the casts? I believe this is "wind knotting" maybe I got the term wrong.. Is there a certain way to load braid on the reel vs. mono? Thanks

  4. This is a fantastic video! Very through & organized content!! We have been proud to share it with friends 😎. Also this video has been a great refresher. It has given us a different perspective even though we have been salt water fishing for 2 yrs! We have viewed this 1 video several times and appreciate the additional links. Thanks again JC for the educational content 🎣

  5. Get some FishBites strips. Catch some pinfish, small croaker, etc.
Cut up those small fish in strips of "live bait"
Put on a larger hook, attach strips of fresh bait
That’s how I always get rolling when I reach the salt.

  6. What a great informative video, fun fact: all that beginner stuff I still use it everyday, thank you for the upload, keep’em coming.

  7. It’s nice to see someone recommended the “Berkley Big Game Power Series” fishing rods. They are probably THE BEST AND MOST VALUABLE ROD for $25.00, they are made of fiberglass so they are GREAT for Flexibility and crankbait fishing.

The Berkley Big Game Power Series rods are Top 3 on this list in terms of long term reliability, long term durability, flexibility with some backbone to bring in larger fish.

The Berkley Big Game Power Series rods are SO VERSATILE! They are 2 piece BUT they have an EXCELLENT uniform bend in the fiberglass rod material. The Berkley Big Game Power Series rod (spinning) was my very 1st fishing rod I got when I was 12 at Walmart (I’m over 30 now) and I caught my first “Big Fish” when I was 12 on it. I caught a 36 inch Tiger Musky right on the side of the dock at the bottom fishing with a lime green with black dots and a silver backing spoon lure. The Berkley Big Game Power Series fiberglass rod absorbed all of the stress and fight from the fish! It makes it really easy on your body because the fiberglass rod absorbs the fight so nicely.

I have 2 Berkley Big Game Power Series rods and 1 of them I have had for about 12 years now. And it still catches big fish like the first day I got it. I am a BIG FAN of fiberglass rods. Because they last longer, due to their flexibility, reliability and durability. They have a little extra weight but I will take that over a snapped or broken rod just from “regular use.”

My style of fishing is casting REAL hard from shore because I don’t have a boat. So I have to SLING my lures as far as I can, AND I NEED A ROD THAT IS FLEXIBLE TO DO THAT AND NOT SNAP. I CANNOT USE A ROD THAT IS BRITTLE, I NEED FLEXIBILITY IN A ROD TO DO THIS. And in the past I have snapped 3 rods because of my style of fishing. And they all snapped IN THE SAME SPOT… THE TIP! So I began asking”Why is that?” Then I did research and it all made COMPLETE sense and I had “The data to prove it.” Graphite is brittle, Fiberglass is flexible. And ALL 3 of my previous rods I snapped at the tip were made with… Graphite! And I would wonder why after they snapped I would look over at “Old and Faithful” (My Berkley Big Game Power Series rod) and wonder why that one does not snap when I load up the rod before a hard cast and SLING my lure out there… and it was because it was made of Fiberglass and I did alot of reading and Fiberglass is heavier but it is also MORE FLEXIBLE AND DURABLE BECAUSE OF THE FIBERGLASS MATERIAL. AND… FIBERGLASS HAS BEEN USED IN FISHING SINCE THE 1970’s! So there ya go! “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”

Clearly if Fiberglass rods have been in use since the 1970’s that means… IT WORKS… and for a good reason. And fiberglass gives you better feel and action when crankbait fishing and fiberglass rods will improve your hook up ratio because there is flex and bend in the rod and the fiberglass material when it bends from a fish will actually sink the hook in deeper due to the material and bend it has.

September 2022 I caught a 41 inch Spotted Musky on a 7 foot (2 piece) Berkley Fusion Rod Combo (I swapped the reel and put a PENN Fierce III 5000 on the Berkley Fusion rod with 300 yards of 30lb Sufix 832 Advanced Superline with a light 12 inch Eagle Claw black steel leader). That Berkley Fusion Rod that I caught that 41 inch Spotted Musky on IS MADE OF FIBERGLASS. Has a great bend in that rod even for a 2 piece.

Read my review on Berkley’s website in the Berkley Big Game Power Series rod section you’ll see the photos of that 41 inch Spotted Musky I caught. And I have some other nice size fish I caught.

Another thing I like about the Berkley Fusion rod is that it has Aluminum Oxide Guide Inserts ALL THE WAY TO THE TIP. The only thing I don’t like about the Berkley Big Game Power Series rods are that they don’t have an Aluminum Oxide or Titanium Oxide Guide insert tip… it’s stainless steel which may cause slight line grooves from braid line over time. But other than that the Berkley Big Game Power Series rods are AN EXCELLENT VALUE FOR YOUR MONEY. The Berkley Fusion Rods are a great value for the money too!

  8. What’s your favorite ugly? I have the gx2 and looking to buy a new rod. Looking at the inshore select and the elite.

  9. Get power pro line best one to use don’t cheap out on your line man you will end up loosing fish and you’ll end up wasting Double on line trust me I learned the hard way

  10. Im new to fishing and im going to fishing with my gf and her father and im going to do fresh water fishing so i have no idea and u give me any pointers

  11. Great video JC! Jeez, you guys get fishing on the cheap over there. Cheapest Penn Wrath 4000 here is £43.95 (UK) which is $60.22! 😮😮
A mountain of sound and useful info there, but, 2 points. I wouldn’t advise a beginner to use Braid. It tangles easier, and some rod and reel combinations don’t work well with Braid, and you get a lot of wind knots. Monofilament for beginners.
Also, I think you should have mentioned casting weights of fishing rods. A beginner that buys that Ugly stik gx2 with a casting weight of 1/8 to 5/8oz (which is a great rod) is going to be a bit upset if he puts a 4oz weight on it, & it breaks. Just my opinion – everyone to their own! Stay safe & well! 👍👍

  12. Right off the bat this guy is better than most fishing channels instead of taking 5 minutes recommending bs. This guy tells you what YOU’LL ACTUALLY NEED.

  13. Good Stuff Simple Effective And Fun,, My Saltwater Fishing Starts About June or so when Catfish Start Spawning , By Then I’ve Went Thru The Spring Crappie Fishin, 🎣 , The Bluegill, Shell Cracker Bedding Always In ,On , Or Within A Week Of The Full Moon In May , ,, From There Outside of Some After Thunderstorm ⛈️ Bass I Head South ,It Gets Hot During Daytime So I Prefer Nights/Mornings If The Tides Cooperate , This Surf Fishing Adventure Is Somewhat New To Me , But As Long As The Bobbers Bouncing Or The Bite Is Bangin It’s All Good lol 🤣 ,, Keep It Reelin 🐟🎣 👀👍

  14. That was a great beginners video JC! I wonder how many people you have turned on to fishing with your videos, you have awesome content! The tug is the drug… isn’t that what you say often?

  15. Thank you, this is the best no nonsense “what you need” video for beginner fishermen. Thanks again and subbed.

  16. I grabbed the Ugly Stik GX2 and Shimano reel (they match oddly enough too). Very good combo! Thanks to you I make my own rigs and know what knots to use. Surprisingly walmart does have a ton of good stuff. I use the tackle trays small and large and keep them together with velcro strips. I use one of those cheapo walmart/ozark brand soft bag coolers to keep anything I catch with some frozen water bottles.

You showed how easy it actually is to fish, and cheap. Thank you for your great videos and the extremely useful info!

  17. A 2500 -3000 reel is good enough you don’t need a huge reel like a 4000 😂🤷‍♂️ I recommend a penn battle 3 and a 7’2 7’4 Medium heavy rod and you’ll be good to go 👍👍

  18. Do not buy Power Pro! I have tried his brand numerous times and it birdnests every time. I only use Fireline and Spider Wire.

  19. For fishing line buy powerpro for $12 for 150yds, and for mono buy some Berkley Big game mono 200yds to 1000yds line for like $7

  20. Top line fishing tackle is great. I have some. Way back when I caught some of my best fish on questionable tackle compared to todays tackle. Recently caught bass on 40+ year old lures just to try them. The fish dont have a clue, they’re hungry. There is a learning curve for beginners.

  21. I could tell where he’s at just by the fish he was mentioning, then he mentions the skyway and jetties. Yup, that’s southwest Florida lol. Too bad the fish here in SoCal are quite different.

  22. Hey JC, I would like to suggest possibly doing a review of TEMU fishing products or have your fan base weigh in on if any of there products are worth the effort?

  23. Well Done with this beautifully made video while watching I had a pen and paper writing down what you said and I’m going to purchase it now, I’ve been looking for a video like this but never found any, thanks again and you’ve got a new subscriber 👍🏻🌟😁😁

  24. The preferred top-water lure for Miami area is a wallet with plenty of cash. You’ll catch fish like stds.
